Soy Wax vs Paraffin Candles — Which is Better for Your Home?

Noticed black marks on a cheap candle's jar? That's paraffin. Here's the simple difference between soy and paraffin — and why we only use soy.

100% soy wax candles burn cleaner with very little soot — like our Lavender Glow.

Ever bought a cheap candle and noticed black marks on the glass after burning it a few times? That black stuff is from paraffin wax. Once you know what's really inside most cheap candles, it's easy to see why so many people in India are moving to soy wax instead.

At Lumina By Saima, every candle we make is poured by hand with 100% natural soy wax. We're not saying this just to sound good — we picked soy from the very start because the candle you burn at home should be as clean as the air you breathe.

So what's the actual difference between the two? Let's keep it simple.

What is Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin is basically a leftover from making petrol and oil. It's used in most candles around the world for one reason — it's really cheap. Those ₹99 candles you see in supermarkets? Almost all of them are paraffin.

The problem is what happens when it burns. Paraffin gives off chemicals like benzene and toluene, which aren't great for you. If you burn one candle now and then in an open room, it's not a big deal. But if you light candles often in a closed bedroom or bathroom, that stuff slowly builds up in the air.

It also leaves black soot. You'll see it as dark marks on the rim of the jar, and over time even on your walls and ceiling. That soot is a sign the candle isn't burning properly.

What is Soy Wax?

Soy wax is made from soybeans — a plant, basically. It's natural, it grows back, and it became popular in the 1990s as a cleaner option than paraffin. Today it's what most good-quality candles are made from.

Here's why people love it:

It burns cleaner. Hardly any soot. Your jar stays clean, your walls stay clean, and the air in your room stays clean too.

It lasts longer. Soy melts at a lower temperature, so it burns slowly. A good soy candle usually lasts about 25–50% longer than a paraffin one of the same size — so you get more for your money.

The scent is steadier.Because soy burns cooler, the fragrance spreads slowly and evenly. You don't get a strong blast for the first 20 minutes and then nothing — it stays gentle from start to finish.

It's kinder to the planet.Leftover soy wax breaks down naturally, and the jar can be reused. Paraffin doesn't break down — it sticks around like any other petroleum product.

It's safer indoors. No nasty chemicals like the ones paraffin gives off. If you have kids, pets, or anyone at home who's sensitive to smells or has breathing issues, this really matters.

What About Gel Candles?

You've probably seen those clear, see-through candles with flowers or little decorations floating inside. That's gel wax. It lets you create pretty designs that you simply can't do with soy.

Our Lavender Bloom Gel Candle uses gel wax for exactly this reason — the dried lavender sitting inside the clear gel looks beautiful. Gel burns fine when it's made well, so we use it only when the look is worth it.

We use gel wax only where the visual effect calls for it — like our Lavender Bloom Gel Candle.

For everything else — our heart candles, rose petal candles, tins and jars — we stick to soy. Always.

Why We Only Use Soy Wax

When Saima started making candles in our little studio in Srinagar, choosing soy was an easy decision. We're a small, handmade brand, and we actually care about what goes into each candle — the wax, the scent, the jar, even the packaging.

A candle should make your home feel warm and lovely. It shouldn't fill the air with stuff you can't see from burning petroleum.

So every Lumina candle is:

  • Poured by hand in small batches in Kashmir
  • Made with 100% natural soy wax
  • Scented with safe, skin-friendly fragrance oils
  • Made with a clean cotton wick

Light one up and you get soft light, a gentle scent that lasts, and the peace of mind that nothing harmful is burning in your home.

How to Know if a Candle is Really Soy

Sadly, some brands slap “soy candle” on the label even when it isn't. Here's how to check for yourself:

  1. Look for “100% soy wax.”Words like “soy blend” or “natural wax” can mean it's mostly paraffin with just a little soy mixed in.
  2. Watch for soot. Burn it a few times and check the jar rim. Lots of black soot usually means paraffin.
  3. Look at the price.Real soy wax costs money. A ₹49 candle just can't be pure soy — the raw material alone costs more than that. If it's too cheap, it's probably not soy.
  4. Just ask. Any honest candle maker will happily tell you what wax they use. We always do.
